Classic Coleslaw Salad Recipe

The salad:

  • 1 pkg. coleslaw salad mix
  • 1 red onion, sliced in thin rings

The dressing:

  • ½ c. oil
  • 6 tbsp. sugar
  • 6 tbsp. vinegar
  • ½ tsp. salt

The topping:

  • ½ pkg. thin chow mein noodles

Combine ingredients for dressing; mix with salad in salad bowl.  Top with chow mein noodles.

Premier Pasta Salad Recipe

The salad:

  • 1 lb. Gemelli (corkscrew) pasta
  • 2 red peppers, cut in thin strips
  • 2 yellow peppers, cut in thin strips
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Salt and pepper to taste

The dressing:

  • 1/2 c. ketchup
  • 2/3 c. mayonnaise
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1/4 c. vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. dried basil
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar

Cook pasta al dente; drain and set aside.  Place peppers on lined baking sheet, spritz with oil spray, and season with salt and pepper.  Roast on 475 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
Whisk dressing ingredients together and toss with pasta and peppers in large serving bowl.
Refrigerate up to 5 days.

America’s Move to Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids

The First Lady promotes kids weight loss nationwide to curb the growing trend of obesity in children. To quote, “The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake.” – Michelle Obama

On February 9, 2010, the First Lady launched a comprehensive initiative called “Let’s Move!”. This program is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. Giving parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices. Providing healthier foods in our schools. Ensuring that every family has access to healthy, affordable food. And, helping kids become more physically active.


USDA’s new food icon, MyPlate, serves as a quick visual reminder to all consumers to make healthy food choices when you choose your next meal, built off of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for all Americans. MyPlate can help prioritize food choices by reminding us to make half of our plate fruits and vegetables and shows us the other important food groups for a well-balanced meal: whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy.
